The second day of negotiations between the General Secretariat of Fisheries and the heads of the autonomous communities of the Cantabrian ended without an agreement on the distribution of the mackerel quota.

According to Ministry of Marine Affairs of the Xunta de Galicia sources, “The position of the communities is distant; however there was understanding on starting the meetings.”

The Galician fishing sector representatives will assess the situation to develop new proposals, Europa Press agency informed.

Galicia opposes a distribution largely based on catches, regardless of the crew.

Meanwhile, the Secretary General of Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and Environment, (Magrama), Carlos Dominguez, said last Saturday he would have no objections to a linear distribution, if the sector asked so.

For his part, the president of the Asturias Federation of Fishermen’s Association, Dimas Garcia, said the State Administration promised to send immediately different quota sharing possibilities, looking for points of agreement among the regions’ proposals, El Comercio reported.

According to Dimas Garcia, the only thing in which the ministry has been decisive so far is in the need to establish a quota distribution ship by ship, to prevent the fishery to concentrate on a few days, with the consequent negative impact on prices.

Dominguez claims that each boat may program freely when and where it is more interesting to fish for mackerel, and this is only possible if you have a quota guaranteed, which no one can dispute.

Moreover, a consensus on the allocation of the jack mackerel quota was reached, and the distribution will be by region. Now, the question is the distribution of quotas within each region, which is left to the industry, newspaper Faro de Vigo informed.
