MADRID – The drawing of the “El Niño” lottery held Monday in Madrid has distributed millions of dollars to people all over Spain, with Galicia taking first prize, while bringing the Christmas season to a close as it always does.

The winning number for first prize, worth $2.7 million for the ten-part series ($270,000 for each tenth) was No. 76,254, sold in the town of Monforte de Lemos in Lugo, a province in the northwestern Spanish region of Galicia.

And for the first time this year a special prize consisting of some $54 million was awarded to just one of the tenths of the first prize, specifically to that belonging to series 21, part five.

The second prize of the lottery, worth close to $1 million (some $100,000 the tenth) went to No. 69,362 and was distributed all over Spain.

With around $340,000 for the series (some $34,000 the tenth), third prize was taken by No. 8,347 and was also sold in different parts of the country.

The “El Niño” lottery grew in popularity following the success of the first drawing held on the Feast of the Epiphany of the Baby Jesus on January 6, or Three Kings Day, after which it was decided the following year, in 1942, to establish it as an extraordinary lottery, a popular custom that has become rooted among Spaniards as putting the finishing touch on the Christmas holidays.
