Vigo, Spain, Dec 16 (EFE).- Petroleos Mexicanos, or Pemex, plans to build a tuna fishing boat, three tankers and a supply ship in 2014 at the Barreras shipyard in Vigo, a city in the northwestern Spanish region of Galicia, spending a total of 300 million euros (about $410 million) on the vessels, a high-level executive with the Mexican state-owned oil giant said Monday.
Carlos Roa, Pemex’s No. 2 executive, made the announcement during a ceremony in Vigo to mark the Mexican company’s assumption of control of the Spanish shipyard.
Negotiations are being held for three other “big ships” and the international auction for construction of floating hotels appears set for resolution on Dec. 30, Roa said.
The upcoming end to the auction process is “excellent news” for Barreras and Spanish state-owned shipyard Navantia, which are in the running for the contracts, the Pemex executive said.
An agreement has also been reached for the opening of “a Barreras in Mexico,” Roa said.
“We are not going to take the shipyard” but plan to create a new one that will share technology and experiences with the one in Vigo, the Pemex executive said.
Pemex and Barreras closed their investment deal on Nov. 26, with the Mexican oil giant purchasing a 51 percent stake in the Spanish shipyard for 5.1 million euros ($7.01 million).
Pemex, which will have three seats on the Barreras board, has identified two possible locations in Mexico for a shipyard, with the final decision hinging on the presence of associated industries in these areas, Roa said.
The technical cooperation agreement could lead to the transfer of workers from Mexico to Spain and in the other direction, the Pemex executive said.
The joint bid for the flotels by Barreras and Navantia ranks No. 2 in the financial area but should end up with “good points” in the technical area, Roa said.
“If we can finish in first place in technical points, we will have two ships and the commitment to make one here and another at Navantia,” Roa said. “If it is second place, we’ll have only one ship that we would build at Barreras.”
“With the quality we are presenting and the price we are offering, we will have the two ships, but it depends on the bidding process,” the Pemex executive said.
