A third suspect in a shooting that left a Belvidere teen dead last month has been charged with murder, the Boone County State’s Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday, Dec. 11.
Ricardo Garcia, 20, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the Nov. 30 shooting that killed 18-year-old Giovanni Galicia. Prosecutors allege that although Garcia did not pull the trigger, his actions caused Galicia’s death.
Twenty-two-year-old Anthony Perez and Ricardo Figueroa, 22, have also been charged with first-degree murder in the case. Perez is the alleged shooter, police said. All three suspects are known gang members, according to court documents.
Galicia was shot several times while he sat in a car in the 2100 block of Lake Shore Drive in Belvidere just after midnight Nov. 30. After the shooting, a car matching the description of one at the scene led Boone County Sheriff’s deputies on a high-speed chase into Rockford.
Figueroa was arrested after the chase and jailed on the initial charge of unlawful use of a weapon by a street gang member. He was later charged with murder as prosecutors allege that Galcia died while Figueroa was committing mob action.
Perez escaped after the car chase and later turned himself in.
Garcia also attempted to flee, but was shot in the leg by a Boone County deputy after a foot chase in the area of Spring Creek and Perryville roads. A gun was found inside the suspect vehicle.
Garcia’s bond has been sat at $2 million. All three suspects are lodged in the Boone County Jail.
First-degree murder is punishable by 20 years to life in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Unlawful use of a weapon by a street gang member is a Class 3 felony, punishable by three to seven years in prison.
