P2.5M worth of shabu seized

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has seized P2.5 million worth of shabu in a raid in Sampaloc, Manila Tuesday afternoon.
Through a search warrant issued by Judge Reynaldo Alhambra of the Manila Regional Trial Court (RTC) branch 53, members of the NBI – Reaction Arrest and Interdiction Division (NBI-RAID) raided a suspected hideout of the notorious Pimentera drug syndicate and recovered more than half a kilo of metamphetamine hydrochloride or shabu.
The NBI, however, failed to arrest the subject of the search warrant, whom NBI-RAID chief Atty. Ross Jonathan Galicia identified as a certain Jeffrey Villanueva, the alleged “muscleman” or enforcer of the drug syndicate.
However, NBI has arrested two of its members, Elove and Rosario Agulto, who were allegedly those tasked to repack the illegal drugs in clear plastic sachets.
Galicia added that NBI is still trying to establish the complicity of a third person identified as Lat Leverendo Regala.
“Matagal ang naging surveillance namin sa grupong ito, probably many years ago. Sinuwerte kami dahil finally may nakuha kaming asset na nakapenetrate sa circle ng grupo. We also would like to commend Mayor Joseph Estrada for his support and help [We have been closely watching this group probably many years ago. We got lucky because we finally get an asset who can penetrate the group. We also would like to commend Mayor Joseph Estrada for his support and help],” Atty. Galicia said.
He revealed that the Pimentera Drug Syndicate actually started in the 90′s as a kidnap-for-ransom group. The members of the group had already been arrested before but they were able to bolt out of prison.
“The group decided that it was too risky to stick to armed robbery and that it was not as lucrative as the drug business. So they decided to stick to selling drugs and dropped the armed robbery business,” Atty. Galicia said.
Citing the most recent intelligence report they received, Galicia said that the group is now headed by a defeated Manila councilor, whom he declined to name, and is now operating in Metro Manila.
Meanwhile, the NBI is now investigating whether several police officers in Manila are protecting the suspected leader of the syndicate.
Galicia said that aside from illegal drugs, NBI has also confiscated several high-powered firearms, which they said belong to policemen.
