Red tide continues hampering mussel sector activity

The Technological Institute for the Control of Marine Environment (Intecmar) decided to prohibit the capture of mussels in the polygon Redondela A- in the estuary of Vigo from yesterday due to the existence of lipophilic toxin.
The authority decided to close one of the platform polygons from Redondela due to the high toxicity of the red tide that has been affecting the area for several days.
Currently, there are six areas available; two in Vilagarcía, one in Cambados and three in the villa of the aqueducts, the agency Europa Press reported.
This Spanish summer was very difficult for most mussel producers in Galicia and this was added to the fact that opening of the polygons lasted only a month because the red tide forced scientists from Intecmar to close almost all the areas of the coast in several stages.
Only the fifty mussel nurseries that were closed yesterday have been operating in O Morrazo since early October, the newspaper Faro de Vigo reported.
In the area, only eight boats, platform owners and different mussel cooperatives were working.
On the other hand, the industry announced its concern over the lack of confidence expressed by Italy over the mussel native to Galicia. In this regard, the Galician government recognized the blockage of a lot of bivalve sent to the neighbouring country.
As it was explained from the Secretariat of Marine Affairs, the Italian authorities wanted to return the product caught at a platform polygon that generated one of the six sanitary warnings performed when detecting the lipophilic toxin in the Galician mussel, the newspaper La Voz de Galicia reported.
“Now that polygon is open and the capture has been authorized, and the mussels that have been sent to the market are in perfect conditions to be consumed,” stated the authority.
