The Technological Institute for the Control of Marine Environment (Intecmar) authorized the reopening of shellfish capture areas in the estuaries of Muros and Noia, Camariñas and Ferrol after the toxin causing the red tide has abated.

It is expected that next Monday workers may resume their activity after over two weeks’ closure, reported La Opinión.

Intecmar also decided to reopen a shellfish capture zone in the estuary of Vigo and a platform polygon in Redondela while another one in the same area closed.

Thus, there are now only five open mussel farming polygons in the estuaries of the community: four in Redondela and one in Cambados.

In three of the reopened areas (Muros and Noia, Camariñas and Vigo) the capture of infaunal shellfish — cockles, clams and razor clams – was being performed while that of Ferrol is focused on the production of chlamys varia and queen scallop.

According to the largest chief of the association of Noia, Santiago Cruz, more than 1,500 professionals dedicated to cockle and clam catch will resume the activity “as usual” on 4 November. Besides, he stressed that the reopened area is “the place where there is more shellfish.”

The largest chief complained that it was “late” when the Secretariat of Marine Affairs and Intecmar detected the presence of toxins in the river, a situation that caused them considerable loss. Secretariat authorities, for their part, state that “there was no delay” in the closure warning in the estuary.

Meanwhile, the secretary of Marine Affairs, Rosa Quintana, expressed her optimism for the evolution of the red tide.

“Although it may be slow, the toxin begins to evolve positively, in the sense that it is disappearing from some analysis,” she said.

“In Galicia things are being well performed. We are able to detect these irregularities before they reach the consumer,” she added.

In Galician markets, the price of premium cockle on Tuesday stood at EUR 14.26, that is to say, almost EUR 2 more than on Monday. And the price of clams also went up — but at present they have a testimonial presence at the market — by exceeding EUR 60, the newspaper La Voz de Galicia reported.
