Mysterious suicide of Dutch politician in northern Spain

Reportedly Smits Álvarez has been missing since October 10th.

A councilor in Holland’s left-wing PvdA party, Smits Álvarez was wanted for alleged financial fraud, after he allegedly took €4,000 ($5,400) from the party’s coffers and was under an international search warrant and extradition.

According to La Voz de Galicia (Spanish language) he had fled the country, leaving his mobile phone behind and sending a final Twitter message wishing his followers well.

The newspaper also reported on Tuesday that Smits Álvarez had called his wife at 5pm on Monday to tell her that he was planning to kill himself. Reportedly, he also called emergency services, but they were not able to arrive in time to prevent him from taking his own life.

Binnenlands Bestuur (in Dutch) reported that Smits Álvarez has family connections with Galicia, as his mother was from Oza in the province of Carballo, and Álvarez visited the family in Spain at least twice a year.

Despite the financial allegations, police in both Spain and the Netherlands are puzzled as to why Smits Álvarez took his life.
