(ANSAmed) – MADRID, OCTOBER 14 – Local authorities on Monday
shut down sea mussel farms in the northwestern Spanish
autonomous community of Galicia due to a red tide of toxic micro
algae in the estuaries, sources said.

Authorities called the shut-down and sales ban due to strong
southerly winds, which can cause ”the toxic process to spread
towards production areas” on the Vigo and Ria de Arousa coastal
areas.

Seven extraction areas have been shut down permanently and
six are temporarily shuttered. The ban does not include
cultivation of other seafood in the Rias Baixas area, where five
producers are still open. (ANSAmed).
