Jo-Ann Fabrics and Crafts is returning to Glendale this fall and the store is staffing its new location on Central Avenue with help from the Verdugo Jobs Center.

The craft store will open Nov. 8, according to Verdugo Jobs Center employee Mayra Galicia, who said the company reached out in July about arranging a hiring event for the new store.

Galicia said that around 350 applicants came in over three days last week seeking jobs at the new store. She said 110 of them received job offers.

New employees will return to the job center next week for orientation, Galicia said.

Philip Lanzafame, Glendale’s officer for economic development, said earlier this summer that the new Jo-Ann Fabrics will be a larger “regional superstore.”

The new store will open in a 34,000-square-foot building at 1000 S. Central Ave. that formerly housed an Albertsons supermarket.

Jo-Ann’s former location at Orange Street and Wilson Avenue — a longtime fixture for the hobbiest-and-crafts set in the area — closed in January to make way for a planned six-story, 166-unit apartment building being developed by Holland Partners Group.

Jo-Ann representatives did not return calls or emails as of Tuesday afternoon.
