With ‘persuasion,’ Spain seeks consensus for not ratifying agreement with Mauritania

The head of the Secretariat General of Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment (Magrama), Carlos Dominguez, ensured the central government is using “persuasion” for the European Parliament (EP) not to ratify the fisheries agreement with Mauritania.
This agreement excluded the Galician cephalopod fleet from Mauritanian fishery a few months ago.
After meeting with the Minister of Rural Environment of Galicia, Rosa Quintana; and the mayor of Marin, Maria Ramallo; Dominguez warned that negotiations are now moving to “another phase of the game,” moving away from the “specialist” area and entering the field of “sensitivities and nationalism,” the agency Europa Press reported.
“We will exercise persuasion, parliamentary group per parliamentary group,” he said.
“We have the collaboration of all the Spanish MEPs and they will also persuade their colleagues that this agreement is not the agreement we want and it is not the agreement Galicia needs,” he added.
Dominguez stated the Spanish government expects a joint committee consisting of the European Union (EU) and Mauritania is convened to address this issue. And he recalled that some improvements were achieved in the renegotiation of the pact on issues related to the fishing grounds, charges and the possibility of capturing some species such as hake.
However, he stressed that “there are still things to negotiate.”
Echoing the claims of Galicia, Spain defends the possibility of capturing cephalopods and returning to Mauritanian fishing grounds.
“It is simply necessary to outline the new lines of work” to achieve the same result as that of the Fisheries Committee in the EP plenary, stated Quintana after expressing satisfaction with the topics discussed in the meeting.
The official expressed confidence in the ability of the central government and the Xunta de Galicia to achieve the same “success” in the EP plenary against the agreement reached in the parliamentarian committee.
