The Ministry of Rural and Marine Affairs of the Xunta de Galicia this year ordered the allocation of EUR 4.2 million in grants to scrap local inshore boats.

This figure is higher than the previous one, which was EUR 2.8 million, benefiting 27 vessels registered in Galicia.

Under the new order published in the Official Journal of Galicia (DOG), the boats of the Galician longline sector affected by the management plan in the Northwest Cantabrian fishing grounds start this year with an advantage over the rest of the fleet segments.

Moreover, only those vessels exceeding 20 years of age will be able to obtain scores for years in the activity. The vessels wishing to apply for the aids for the permanent cessation of fishing activities will have a month to do so, reports La Opinión.

A total of 40 Galician ships would be beneficial in 2013. The legislation includes a score to be added to make the list of preferences.

The inshore vessels affected by the management plan of the Northwest Cantabrian area will directly add 33 points, against 31 of the purse seine or 30 of the rest of the fishing gear.

In addition, vessels being 20 or more years old will add one point for each year, while those aged 30 and up – and until 50 years — will receive further 0.25 additional points per year.

When the final count is made, if there is a draw, priority will be given to the oldest vessels.

And if the draw persists, priority will be given to vessels targeting mostly those species found immersed in a recovery plan, such as the hake.

If there is still a draw, vessels using less selective gear will have preference.

The Council recalled the vessels that requested grants for scrapping in 2012 and then refused to receive them, will be subjected to a 35 per cent deduction of the points obtained after implementing the selection criteria.

The finance of 75 per cent of the aids will be performed by the European Fisheries Fund and 25 per cent by the central executive.
