Rosalia Mera Goyenechea, 69, has passed away according to Spanish media reports. Rosalia Mera was most known for being the richest woman in Spain and the co-founder of clothing brand Zara.
According to local media reports, Rosalia Mera suffered a stroke while vacationing on the Mediterranean island of Menorca. She died at 8:30 pm local time in the private San Rafael Hospital in La Coruna after being transferred from a hospital in Menorca.

“The group wishes to send its sincere condolences to [Mera’s] loved ones and friends at this extremely difficult time, after the loss of a person who contributed so much to the origins and development of the company,” said Zara’s parent company, Inditex, in a statement.
Rosalia Mera’s net worth, according to Forbes, was $6.1 billion as of March 2013.

1. Rosalia Mera Goyenechea was born in La Coruna (in Spain’s Galicia region) on January 28, 1944.
2. Rosalia Mera Goyenechea dropped out of school to work as a tailor in a clothing store at the young age of 11, which marked the start of her career as a seamstress.
3. Rosalia Mera Goyenechea married Amancio Ortega in 1966. Nine years into their marriage, the couple opened the first Zara store in La Coruna. The store then franchised around the world and has expanded into one of the world’s largest retailers.
4. Rosalia Mera Goyenechea and Amancio Ortego found Inditex, which owns Zara as well as other brands including Massimo Dutti and Bershka.
5. Rosalia Mera Goyenechea and Amancio Ortego separated in 1986. They have two children, Sandra and Marcos, together.
6. Rosalia Mera Goyenechea co-founded the Paideia Galiza Foundation, based in La Coruna, in 1986. The organization aims to assist those with physical and mental disabilities to find jobs and to provide training and education workshps.
