Fairfax Woman Among Spanish Train Crash Victims
Filed Under EN
ARLINGTON, Va. (CBSDC/AP) – A Fairfax woman was among the nearly 80 people killed Wednesday night when a train derailed in Spain, the Catholic Diocese of Arlington says.
The Diocese of Arlington says on its Facebook page that Ana Maria Cordoba, a benefits specialist for the diocese, died in the wreck.
Cordoba, 47, was traveling with her husband, Philippe, and daughter, Christina, at the time of the crash, reports Catholic News Service.
CNS reports that Philippe and Christina, a rising senior at Bishop O’Connell High School in Arlington, were in stable condition at a hospital.
The three family members were traveling to meet Cordobas’ son, Santiago, who had just completed a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.
They are members of St. Mary of Sorrows Parish in Fairfax.
A Mass honoring and remembering Cordoba is scheduled for noon Friday at the Cathedral of Saint Thomas More on Glebe Road in Arlington, which is next door to the diocese where Cordoba worked.
Messages left for the diocese late Thursday were not immediately returned.
Officials said that the derailment possibly occurred because the train was traveling too fast.
At least six Americans have been listed as injured or dead as a result of the accident.
