Iberdrola has inaugurated the 176.9MW Santo Estevo 2 hydro plant extension in Galicia, north-west Spain.
The project boosts total capacity at the facility in the Sil river basin, close to the village of Nogueira de Ramuin, to 441MW and makes it the largest hydro station in the region.
Work to optimise an existing dam, reservoir, substation and export power lines started in September 2008 and was completed at the end of 2012. The new powerhouse was built underground to minimise environmental impact and Iberdrola’s total investment in the project topped €127m.
Speaking at the official inauguration ceremony, chief executive Ignacio Galan revealed the San Pedro power plant extension, downstream from Santo Estevo, is slated for completion in 2016.
He said: “It is our intention to continue supporting Galicia as we have until now, actively supporting local manufacturers and service providers and being an engine for growth.”
