Galicia remains the leading producer of aquaculture turbot (Psetta maxima) in the European Union (EU), although in recent years it has started to lose participation due to the current economic crisis.
According to the Business Association of Marine Aquaculture Producers of Spain (Apromar), in 2012 the Spanish marine farms produced 7,970 tonnes of turbot, and 99.2 per cent of this total (about 7,900 tonnes) was produced in hatcheries installed in Galicia.
The remaining 0.8 per cent corresponds to production in the Basque Country and in Cantabria.
Although 2012 production represents an increase of 2.8 per cent over the previous year, it is very far from the record of 8,070 tonnes of Galician turbot obtained in 2008.
That year, Galicia contributed over 87 per cent of the total EU production, while in 2012 its turnout did not reach 62 per cent, the newspaper La Voz de Galicia reported.
Apromar also pointed out that in 2012 the production of juvenile turbot specimens in Spain amounted to 18.95 million units, that is to say, 10.6 per cent more than a year before.
Meanwhile, Europe produced 12,842 tonnes of aquaculture turbot, a figure which shows an increase of 18.8 per cent over 2011, reported La Opinión.
Spain was followed by other European countries that produce turbot: France, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Iceland and Denmark.
In Portugal, in particular, turbot production grew 23 per cent in 2011, reaching 2,500 tonnes, and 60 per cent in 2012, up to 4,000 tonnes. However, this figure is lower than the one expected after launching the plant Pescanova in Mira.
Apromar indicated that according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), China produced 64,000 tonnes per year “but it has not been determined if it is the same species” of turbot as the one produced in Galicia.
Overall, Spanish aquaculture production grew by 3.3 per cent year on year in 2012, according to Apromar statistics.
