Warminster School STUDENTS from Warminster School travelled to Krakow in Poland to find out more about concentration camps and the medieval past of the city.

The first day included a guided tour around the Galicia Jewish Museum and a meeting with Józef Rosolow-ski, a political prisoner who survived Mauthausen Concentration Camp.

The trip also involved a four-hour guided tour of Krakow on the second day, before the students headed to the Occupation Museum at Oskar Schindler’s factory.

On the final day, they visited Auschwitz-Birkenau, where the students took a silent tour of the death camp and observed the artefacts and exhibitions.

History teacher Juliette Walker said: “It was certainly a trip to remember for all the students and staff and it was a privilege to lead.

“The students were completely engrossed in Jozef’s talk and asked really insightful questions. They were all moved by his re-telling of his experiences, his artwork and photos.

“When they arrived at Birkenau, they could not believe the scale of the site and were chilled by its sole purpose as a death camp.”

In April, Christian Folkesson, Aiden King, Thomas Liquorice and Bailey Maxwell, students from Warminster School, benefited from a unique hands-on learning experience at the University of Exeter.

Sponsored by the university and delivered by educational charity the Smallpiece Trust, this four-day residential course gave 44 students a valuable insight into artificial intelligence.

During the course, the 13- and 14-year-olds learnt about the different aspects of the field of artificial intelligence including talking robots, otherwise known as ‘chatbots’.

Students worked in small teams to develop their own computer programme that they then tested for intelligence.

The students also discovered the methods machines of the future may use to learn about their environments and make decisions for themselves.
