MEXICO CITY – The Spanish region of Galicia and the Mexican government have agreed to expand their shipbuilding alliance via Petroleos Mexicanos, or Pemex, with Galician shipyards now looking at the possibility of constructing more vessels for the state-owned oil giant.
Galician regional government President Alberto Nuñez Feijoo discussed the status of the shipbuilding alliance after meeting on Monday in Mexico City with President Enrique Peña Nieto and high-level Mexican officials at the Los Pinos presidential palace.
Galicia is trying to win new shipbuilding contracts from Pemex worth $240 million, Nuñez Feijoo told reporters.
Galician shipyards won contracts from Pemex last year for the construction of two floating hotels worth $190 million each, and the goal is to expand the alliance with deals to build more vessels.
The idea of Pemex taking an equity interest in an as yet undetermined Galician shipyard was proposed at the meeting, the regional government president said.
“I expect and hope that more ships will be built in Galician in the first half of 2013 (for the Mexican oil company) and that Pemex will be a financial shareholder in one of the shipyards in Vigo (Galicia),” Nuñez Feijoo said. EFE
