A Sioux Falls woman is being hailed a hero for saving three kids and sacrificing her life in an effort to save another from a burning apartment.

Sioux Falls Fire Rescue Chief Jim Sedaris provided an update Wednesday on the fire that killed a woman and a child. The fire broke out at 204 S. Williams Ave. in Sioux Falls. The apartment has four or five units inside it. The fire was reported at 8:45 am Tuesday. The first responding crews saw smoke and flames coming out of the back of the apartment.

Sedaris says before crews arrived Sulmi Guerra Sandoval, 29, lowered three children out of the apartment through a window. People passing by were able to help lower the children down.

Sedaris says Guerra Sandoval died trying to save the fourth child, 2-year-old Eli Galicia.

All three surviving kids are in intensive care. Guerra Sandoval’s 4-year-old daughter was taken to a Minneapolis hospital, and her 2-year-old daughter is in stable condition in Sioux Falls. Galicia’s 4-year-old brother is in critical condition in a Sioux Falls pediatric intensive care unit.

Fire Chief Jim Sideras says Guerra Sandoval is a hero.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Sedaris says they may never know a cause because of the extensive damage the fire caused to the lower apartment.
