R Cable trials LTE with Alcatel-Lucent
Alcatel-Lucent and regional Spanish cable operator R have conducted a trial of 4G LTE mobile technology in Galicia using R’s 2600MHz wireless frequency licence, with the aim of developing advanced ‘next generation entertainment and communication services such as on demand video, catch up TV and nomadic internet connectivity’, according to a press release. Alcatel-Lucent is working with R to test the suitability of LTE in urban and semi-rural areas, for providing a variety of services such as business VPN and internet access, residential fixed wireless access and wholesale connectivity services such as backhaul to mobile network operators. The trial involves providing LTE coverage in three areas of Galicia with FDD and TDD macro cells. Arturo Dopico, CEO of R, said: ‘R has always embraced new technologies to provide innovative services with the guarantee of fibre quality. The trial with Alcatel-Lucent shows how LTE can be used along with other technologies to usher in a full array of services to homes and public spaces like hotels and conference or shopping centres – from TV everywhere to high speed internet and new entertainment and communications services.’
R, the trading name of R Cable y Telecomunicaciones Galicia, offers quadruple-play cable TV, telephony, broadband internet and mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) services. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, R won 20MHz (2×10MHz) in the 2600MHz spectrum band in Galicia for EUR1.02 million (USD1.32 million) in August 2011. R, which is part private equity/part local government owned, says it is present in 90 Galician council areas where it has more than 305,000 customers.
