Telefonica plans to accelerate its fiber-optic network deployment in the Spanish region of Galicia. The FTTH deployment project will be rolled out in the city of Vigo, and will mainly focus on large cities and industrial areas, Europa Press reports, citing Manuel Alonso, head of Telefonica’s operations in Galicia.
Additionally, Telefonica plans to complete the expansion of its 3G network in rural areas of Galicia by year-end. By December 2012, the operator’s 3G network is expected to cover 11,349 additional households across rural Galicia. The project involves overall investments of EUR 64 million. The regional government has contributed EUR 15 to the overall investment.
Telefonica has launched its FTTH network in the city of Vigo three years ago. The operator currently claims a share of 38 percent of Galicia’s mobile telephony market and 42 percent of the region’s fixed broadband market.
According to Alonso, over the past five years, Telefonica has invested nearly EUR 608 million to develop its operations in Galicia, and in 2013, capex for the region has been set at EUR 120 million.
