Our weekly CHAMP & CHUMP: Galicia Malone & Tom Lee
Filed Under EN
Galicia Malone: Even after she went into labor, this 21-year-old suburban Chicago mom-to-be made time to vote on her way to the hospital. Her sense of dedication was mirrored by thousands of other voters across the nation who endured long waits in line to cast their ballots. In Florida there were reports of voters waiting three, five, even seven hours in line to vote. You’d think that would have state government leaders contemplating ways to make voting more efficient, rather than witnessing Florida become the butt of more late-night comedian jokes. Read on if you thought so.
Tom Lee: After a six-year absence from the Legislature, former Republican Senate President Tom Lee of Brandon was re-elected. His reaction to the problems during regular and early voting? Lee carped that Floridians have come to view early voting as a “right and entitlement, which is typical of what happens in this country.” His contempt for voters echoed fellow Republican Sen. Mike Bennett of Bradenton, who complained last year that voting in Florida had gotten too easy. If these guys are a barometer, Floridians are more likely to see poll taxes before they see poll relief.
