Not even the imminent birth of her baby could stop dedicated voter Galicia Malone casting her ballot for Barack Obama in the US presidential election.

First-time voter Ms Malone, 21, popped into her local polling station in  Dolton, Illinois, on route to a local hospital to give birth.

Ms Malone had been in labour for hours, with her contractions just five  minutes apart, when she voted for Mr Obama in the president’s adopted home  state.

She told Chicago’s WBBM radio that she did all she could to postpone her  baby’s arrival in order to vote.

‘I never voted before so this made a major difference in my life,’ she said.  ‘And I wanted this to be a stepping-stone for my daughter.

‘I was just trying to read [the ballot paper] and breathe, read and breathe,’  she added. ‘That’s what I kept telling myself.’

Polling station manager David Orr paid tribute to the new mother’s  determination.

‘My hat goes off to Galicia for not letting anything get in the way of  voting,’ he said.

‘What a terrific example she is showing for the next generation.

‘If only all voters showed such determination to vote.’
