Nothing was going to stop 21-year-old Galicia Malone from voting — not even giving birth.

The young woman’s contractions were five minutes apart when she stopped at her polling center in Dolton, Ill., determined to cast her ballot before heading to the hospital.

“I was just trying to read and breathe, read and breathe,” Malone told WBBM Newsradio. “That’s what I kept telling myself.”

It was Malone’s first time voting — and her first child.

“I never voted before, so this made a major difference in my life,” she said. “And I wanted this to be a stepping-stone for my daughter.”
