The Ministry for Rural and Maritime Affairs of Xunta de Galicia approved 53 projects developed by the Coastal Action Groups, amounting to more than EUR 2.1 million under 2012 call.

These aids are granted under zoning and strategic plans and are financed by the European Fisheries Fund (EFF).

The Galician government intended these aids to promote the competitiveness of fisheries areas, encourage the added value of fishery products and work with small-scale infrastructure and services related to this field.

Out of all the initiatives, 25 projects are productive, that is to say, they have professional or business orientation and account for a total of more than EUR 1.3 million.

The rest of the projects (28) correspond to non-productive investments, which have their social profitability as their key element.

Seventeen of these projects were promoted by the fishing industry, and received an amount of EUR 791,880.

For the first time, this call has included the presentation of a cooperation project called ‘Tangled: Netter Culture and Trade.’

It was presented by the netters’ associations of Burela, Malpica and Corme with which the association Atalaia of A Guarda will collaborate.

The goal of this initiative is to show the netters’ work, tradition and trade.

The Xunta reported that within the non-productive projects the actions performed by the fisheries sector are highlighted:

  • The promotion of artisanal fishery products and the improvement of their traceability;
  • The enhancement of the maritime fishing heritage;
  • Outreach activities;
  • The improvement of working conditions of the shellfish harvesters.
