Domstolen i den spanske provinsen Galicia har begynt å behandle saken om en miljøkatastrofe forårsaket av forliset av tankbåten Prestige 210 km for den spanske kysten for 10 år siden. Blant de anklagede er skipets kaptein, to besetningsmedlemmer og en tidligere tjenestemann. De lir alle anklaget for forsømmelse og feil under styring av skipet.I 2002 lekket ca.80 tusen tonn råolje ut i havet, dette førte til døden av dyr og planter og påførte stor skade mot fiskeriet nordvest i landet.

Madrid (CNN) -- Nearly a decade after what many consider Spain's worst environmental disaster, a trial began Tuesday over the massive oil spill in November 2002 that blackened hundreds of miles of coastline along Spain and France.

An experiment carried out on rodents exposed to fuel similar to that of the Prestige tanker oil spill - which took place nearly a decade ago - shows that inhalation of the fuel causes damage to genetic material. According to the study, led by the University of A Coru-a, the results could be used in relation to people who carry out the industrial cleaning of coasts.
On 19 November, it will be ten years since the sinking of the Prestige, which caused one of Spain's largest ecological disasters.
