The stricken Bahamas registered tanker Prestige, loaded with 77,000 tonnes of fuel oil, ran into trouble, spilling tonnes of oil into the sea and finally sinking off northwestern Spain on November 19, 2002, polluting hundreds of kilometres of Spain’s coastline. Three crew members of the ill-fated Prestige tanker will stand trial on October 16, 2012, a decade after the ship sunk off the coast of northern Spain, spilling tens of thousands of tonnes of oil along shores in the country’s worst ever environmental disaster. Spain is seeking 4 billion euros ($5.2 billion) of damages from insurers and international funds for the oil spill which leaked from the ship after it broke in two in churning Atlantic seas, covering over 1,000 beaches with black sludge and devastating the local fishing industry.
