The Ministry of Rural and Marine Affairs of Xunta de Galicia has certified 14,849.3 tonnes of fish and shellfish with PescadeRías quality seal since early 2012.
This represents an increase of 31 per cent compared to certified artisanal catches destined to first sale over the same period last year.
These data were provided by the Ministry during the technical conference ‘Differentiated Quality and Traceability Systems,’ attended by representatives of the fishermen associations of Galicia and operators of markets.
During the meeting, the department technicians led by Rosa Quintana informed the public cooperative about the current situation of the quality seal PescadeRías and about the prospects for improvement of this mark.
Furthermore, they discussed the importance of ensuring the safety and traceability of fishery products from capture to sale, and the correct identification and fulfillment of sales notes, the regional government reported.
So far, 21 markets have been certified, 22 wholesalers and six transformers.
There are also 36 restaurants associated with the seal, thanks to an agreement signed in 2011 with the Galician Confederation of Hospitality.
PescadeRías seal is a quality mark created and registered by the Galician Government to ensure that artisanal fishing and shellfish products are properly identified and have a high level of freshness. These products are marketed by companies based in Galicia that meet certain quality requirements in addition to those required by the legislation in the field of food safety and respect for the environment.
