The head of the Ministry of Rural and Marine Affairs of Xunta de Galicia, Rosa Quintana, requested the sector should keep “calm” as to the exclusion of the obligation to indicate the country a product comes from on can labels.
Quintana assured the origin of place-specific products — such as the Galician mussel — “will appear” on the labels, since it provides added value.
Therefore, she requested professionals to “calmly” read the rules of the European Union (EU) as soon as they are approved.
What is sought is that the consumer receives the most information possible about the resource being purchased and that the data on labels contribute to differentiate the product, the minister explained, according to Europa Press agency.
In addition, she emphasized that “what has been defended so far” will continue being defended.
However, the chairperson of the Regulatory Council of Galician Mussel, Francisco Alcalde, said that what they want is that “the next Council of Ministers of the EU” resumes the regulation article that was suppressed, since it refers to the obligation of indicating the country of origin of the product.
“There is no other way possible,” stated Alcalde.
The best way to encourage “local quality products” and value them is that products originating abroad indicate their origin in the trade name.
During the latest International Conxemar Seafood Fair, Galician Mussel presented its new image and reported on the new additions in the past year.
During this period nine companies joined: Isidro de la Cal, Conservera Gallega, Luís Escurís Batalla, Remagro, Conservas de Cambados, Jelopa-Los Peperetes, Conservas Daporta, Cocedoiro Serafín Santorum and Delicias Bomar.
Alcalde reported that last year there was a “noticeable increase in the volume of certified mussels,” which changed from 8.6 million kilograms in 2010 to 22 million kg in 2011.
Furthermore, the president of the regional government, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, during the fair claimed that Galician fishing products can “compete on an equal footing” with the rest of the EU and with those from third countries.
“We want to compete and do so on equal footing with the rest,” the official insisted, reports La Opinión.
