The next selection for the B/R La Liga BBVA Team of the Week takes us to Galicia. Galicia is the part of Spain that lies north of Portugal.
It is also the home of the next La Liga BBVA Team of the Week: Deportivo La Coruna. The reason is that the club has not received the publicity it deserves.
Deportivo La Coruna made football news last summer when it returned to La Liga last summer. La Coruna and Galicia were ecstatic about the return. Before talking about Deportivo La Coruna’s history, a comment about its stadium is in order.
Stadium
The main stadium of Deportivo La Coruna is the Estadio Municipal de Riazor. It was dedicated on the date of October 28, 1944.
2012-2013 La Liga History
The club continued in its form by defeating Osasuna on August 20, 2012. Deportivo La Coruna continued with the current La Liga season with tied matches against RC Deportivo and Getafe CF, according to the La Liga webpage.

The actual club was founded in 1906 with Luis Cornide Quiroga as its first President. In the following year, the Spanish King Alfonso XIII gave the club its actual name, Real Club Deportivo La Coruna.
The club experienced many highs and lows during most of its existence until the 1950’s. Regardless, Deportivo La Coruna was able to defeat Real Madrid during the Spanish Cup before the Civil War in Spain and World War II.
After World War II, Deportivo La Coruna entered its Golden Age which lasted during the 1950’s. The names of Oswaldo and Corcuera along with Tino and Moll were associated with that age.
The club received its first Teresa Herrera award in 1955 during that decade. The award is named in honor of one of the historical figures of La Coruna.
The years that followed were ones of being in and out of various leagues until the 1990’s.
Since the 1990’s, Deportivo La Coruna have been in the semifinals and quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League. It participated in the UEFA Europa League, UEFA Intertoto Cup, and UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup.
Deportivo La Coruna participated in La Liga, Copa Del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup during the 1990’s to 2000’s.

The club was designated by UEFA as one of the top 50 in Europe in the year 1998. According to UEFA, the biggest victory was against APOEL in La Coruna on September 28, 1995.
Diego Tristan made recent history in Deportivo La Coruna by becoming the top scorer within the UEFA matches. Juan Carlos Valeron made the most appearances for the team in UEFA events.
UEFA and La Liga Rankings
Deportivo La Coruna is number 85 in the 2011-2012 UEFA Rankings. The club is in sixth place within the 2012-2013 La Liga rankings with five points.
Conclusion
Deportivo La Coruna, like most clubs in La Liga, deserve to be honored. It is not an easy task since FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are the teams from La Liga that receive the most publicity outside of Spain.
The rest of the teams either do not receive coverage or certain people in Spain may not promote other clubs. It is hoped that the La Liga BBVA Teams of the week will give the other teams the publicity they deserve.
