Early elections called in 2 regions of Spain

The Associated Press

Two regions of Spain have called early elections, and they will be seen as a test of voter confidence in the government’s handling of the nation’s economic crisis.

The northwestern region of Galicia and the northern Basque area have both scheduled their elections on Oct. 21, far earlier than the next ones required in 2013.

Galicia is ruled by the governing Popular Party, while the Basque region has a Socialist minority government dependent on support from the Popular Party.

The Popular Party, which has an absolute majority in the national Parliament, has ushered in a series of tough reforms and austerity measures in a bid to reboot an economy in its second recession in three years, with nearly 25 percent unemployment.
