Bulgaria: Crime group trafficking drugs from South America to Europe busted

Sofia. A crime group, which managed to establish a ring for trafficking drugs from South America to Europe, has been neutralised in a joint operation, the press office of the Bulgarian Interior Ministry announced for FOCUS News Agency.
The operation is codenamed Cartel and was realised with the participation of the anti-drugs unit with the Bulgarian General Directorate for Fight against Organised Crime (GDBOP) and the police services of France, DEA-USA and the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) – UK.
After serious information exchange through Interpol and the cooperation with the law-enforcement services of Spain on August 13, 2012 the St. Nicolas Ship, sailing under Bulgarian flag, was detained. During a search on the board of the ship authorities found and confiscated around 3 tons of cocaine, while the captain and the crew – a total of 21 Bulgarian citizens, were arrested.
Two other Bulgarian citizens were arrested on the territory of Bulgaria in the frames of the following actions.
According to initial data one of the two detainees – 37-year-old R.K. from Sofia, is the organiser of the transportation of the drug haul. He does not have a criminal record. The second man was in charge of hiring the crew – 46-year-old man with initials H.H. from Sofia. He has a rich criminal record.
Work on the case continues.

Varna. “I am sorry that there is another case of arrested Bulgarian sailors,” Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov said during his visit to Varna, Radio FOCUS – Varna reported.
The operation for the arrest of the Bulgarian ship with 3 tons of cocaine took several months. It is a joint operation of the Bulgarian and Spanish authorities. Probably Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov will visit Spain next week to check the situation around the case on the spot.
Borisov commented that there was much information about the operation.
“We couldn’t tell the sailors to run away from the ship, because we will seize it,” the prime minister remarked, adding that it would be very hard for the law authorities to judge who was involved in the crime and who wasn’t.
“It will be a long process because the case concerns 3 tons of cocaine. This is a huge amount looked even on world scale,” Borisov said further.
.

Sofia. Bulgaria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is to take the regular actions, as provided under the law, connected to the provision of consular protection to the Bulgarian nationals arrested in Spain, the press office of the ministry announced for FOCUS News Agency.
Yesterday police in Spain arrested 21 Bulgarian citizens on the board of a ship, which was transporting 4.5 tons of cocaine from South America.
.

Madrid. Police arrested 31 people connected to an international drug ring and seized three tonnes of cocaine from a merchant ship off Spain’s southern coast, the interior ministry said Wednesday, AFP informed
Spanish police boarded the vessel Monday, some 80 kilometres (50 miles) off the port of Cadiz, and seized over 100 cocaine packages, the ministry said in a statement.
“At the same time, police detained those responsible for sending and collecting the drugs on land,” it added.
“The shipment, managed by a Colombian group from Madrid, was loaded on the ship in South America by an organisation of Bulgarian nationals.”
The ministry did not say which South American country was the source of the cocaine shipment.
Police detained 21 Bulgarians on the ship, six Colombians in Madrid and four Spaniards in the northwestern region of Galicia.
The authorities suspect the drugs were to be shipped overland from Galicia to Madrid.
Spain is the main gateway to Europe for cocaine from Latin America and for cannabis from neighbouring Morocco. Police regularly make large seizures.
