MADRID – Spanish police say they have arrested 31 people after seizing three tons of cocaine brought from South America on a merchant ship that was caught off the southern coast.

Police unloaded about 100 packages of the drug from the SV Nikolay vessel Wednesday in the southern Atlantic port of Cadiz. A statement said the ship was boarded on Monday about 80 kilometres (50 miles) off the coast of Cadiz.

The arrested include 21 Bulgarians, who had been on the ship, and six Colombians and four Spaniards in Spain.

Police said the drug had been loaded in an unspecified place in the Caribbean and was supposed to brought by sea to the northeastern Spanish region of Galicia for later transport by land to Madrid.
