MANILA, Philippines – A Filipino-American athlete with disability has been nominated for ESPN’s Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly (ESPY) awards.
Track field athlete Raymond Martin is among the five nominees in the category Best Male Athlete with a Disability.
According to ESPY’s website, Martin has won two gold medals in the 800-meter and 200-meter men’s wheelchair division races. He also won two silver medals in the 100-meter and 400-meter dashes at the 2011 Parapan American Games in Guadalaraja in Mexico.
Martin’s uncle is helping him gather support through social networking site, Facebook.
“My nephew Raymond Martin is nominated as Best Male Athlete of the Year with Disability by ESPN. He is Filipino American. Hope we can help him to win,” said Facebook user BryanLhalaine Galicia.
Galicia added, “He is inspiration to us. And I hope he will be an inspiration to other people. Please vote for him. He is another ‘Filipino Pride’”.
Martin’s category is just one of the 33 categories that sports fans can vote for in order for their favorite athletes to win.
“Fans will determine the winners by voting online at ESPN.com/ESPYS up to the start of The 2012 ESPYS,” a press release posted on the ESPN’s website stated.
Voting ends on July 11 when the live show stars.
The ESPYS gather top celebrities from sports and entertainment to commemorate the past year in sports by recognizing major sports achievements, reliving unforgettable moments and saluting the leading performers and performances.
The 2012 ESPYS will recognize both sport-specific achievements, such as “Best MLB Player” and “Best WNBA Player,” as well as best-in-sport winners, such as “Best Team” or “Best Female Athlete” that pit nominees from different sports against each other.
The ESPYS honor ESPN’s commitment to The V Foundation for Cancer Research, a partnership launched with the late Jim Valvano at the inaugural ESPYs in 1993.
