The Ministry of Marine Affairs of Xunta de Galicia certified about 2,000 tonnes of fish and shellfish with PescadeRías quality brand in the first half of the year. This figure represents an increase of 40 per cent compared to those catches certified in the same period in 2011.

The Minister Rosa Quintana recalled that in 2009 the figure representing the certified catches was around 600 tonnes while in 2011 it had been about 1,500 tonnes.

During the closing ceremony of a conference on PescadeRías during which certificates were awarded to different firms adhering to the brand, the Galician official stressed that “the products are properly identified, have a high level of freshness and are marketed by companies located in the community meeting certain quality requirements.”

She also mentioned the importance of “supporting adhered entities,” whose total number amounts to 22 markets and retail centres, 23 wholesalers, 5 processing companies and 36 restaurants.

In addition, she highlighted the “intensive work that has been performed” for the promotion campaigns aimed at the outlets, which she described as “much more direct” compared to the previous years, the agency Europa Press reported.

Quintana also emphasized the spread of those products with the PescadeRías seal among consumers and through “fairs, shows and different events” and a Website.

And she stated that the Galician products may be “pioneers and become one of the best brands” worldwide.

Finally, Quintana said the Government are finishing the Marketing Decree process that will contribute to make Galicia become increasingly well-known in the world of fresh fish and shellfish “as the most demanding producers with food security.”
