Photo: This deal would benefit both Spain and Mexico
Talks between the northwestern Spanish region of Galicia and Mexican oil giant Pemex for the construction of several ships are “advancing” and a deal could be reached “soon,” the head of the regional government, Alberto Nuñez Feijoo, said.
Feijoo met Wednesday with Pemex’s representative in Spain, Jose Manuel Carrera Panizzo, the Galician regional government said in a statement.
The meeting “gives continuity to the different contacts” made over a number of months with state-owned Petroleos Mexicanos, or Pemex, via the economy and industry department and by Feijoo during his visit to Mexico in April, the statement said.
If the “strategic agreement” with Pemex comes to fruition, it will provide “an excellent economic opportunity” for Galicia’s shipyards, Feijoo said, adding that his administration would make “every effort and work” to ensure that this “historic possibility” comes to be.
The ship deal represents a “double opportunity” for both Galicia and Pemex, “linking” one of the world’s largest oil companies to the Spanish region and confirming that it is “a reliable place to invest,” Feijoo said.
