Everyday Drinking
Vinhão Tinto
Afros Vasco Croft, Vinho Verde, Portugal
Vintage: 2010
Alcohol: 12.5%
Price: Around £14 or €17
Northern Portugal can boast a long tradition of producing scintillating, bright, easy-to-drink white wines. The Afros estate is situated overlooking the Lima River in northern Portugal’s Vinho Verde region. What I like about its range of wine, and this red in particular, is that it retains that clean, youthful acidity of the white wine, while imparting its own distinct damson-fruit character.
Something Special
Lapola
Domino do Bibei, Ribeira Sacra, Spain
Vintage: 2010
Alcohol: 12.5%
Price: Around £20 or €22
The Ribeira Sacra is a remote region in Spain’s Galicia community, specializing in red varieties from the Mencia grape. It is one of a handful of small regions that are helping make the country, from a winemaking perspective, one of the most exciting in Europe. This wine is a blend of 70% Godello, 20% Albariño and 10% Doña Blanca, and has a delicate, spicy character on the nose, with a creamy, concentrated texture.
A Treat From the Cellar
Mas de Daumas Gassac
Vin de Pays de l’Hérault, Languedoc, France
Vintage: 2000
Alcohol: 13.5%
Price: Around £38 or €47
The story of Mas de Daumas is now almost wine folklore. The estate was bought in 1971 by Parisian glove maker Aimé Guibert, who, after taking advice from a geology expert, planted vines on its bedrock of limestone. The resulting wine was sublime. This example shows how the wine ages, losing much of its youthful power and maturing into a soft brick-red color with a gentle, characteristic note of wild herbs.
