Mexico: White melon from Tierra Caliente exported to Japan

Melon from Tierra Caliente is doing very well on the Japanese market, far this month, 6,000 tons have been sent.

Miguel Peralta Galicia, coordinator of Agricultural, Live-Stock and Fishing in Sagarpa, said that melon continues to be one of the fruits that are exported worldwide, such as  mango to the United States and now, the white melon to Japan.

Several varieties are produced in the region, but cultivations are changed according to the harvest period, but at the moment the white smooth melon is being exported from El Escondido, Arcelia and Nuevo Guerrero, in the municipality of Tlapehuala.

Since April, they managed to place in the Japanese market 2,023 tons of melon, the total as of last week was 6,548 tons from this area.

Peralta Galicia said that the melon harvest varies according to the producer’s calendar and its expected that in this area the production of smooth melon continues until July, when it is exported from other municipalities of the region. Melon harvest is always spread out over the whole region. It’s accepted in the Japanese cities of Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe, Kyoto and Oita.
