Friendster’s new interface allows users to search, chat with contacts, play games of different genres, and earn points that can be used to buy virtual goods.
MANILA, Philippines – Social networking pioneer Friendster launched on Wednesday its redesigned website, which it described as Southeast Asia’s “social discovery and gaming platform.”
The new interface allows users to search, chat with contacts, play games of different genres, and earn points that can be used to buy virtual goods.
It had the tagline “Living the game.”
“Friendster pioneered the social networking industry and paved the way for the emergence of other site,” said Ganesh Kumar Bangah, chief executive officer of Money Online Global Pte. Ltd., an e-payment and e-lifestyle provider which acquired Friendster in 2009.
“As the global gaming communities grew, it was essential for Friendster to find its unique proposition in order to remain competitive,” Bangah added.
For his part, Friendster chief operating officer Nikolai Galicia said the Philippines has always been one of their biggest markets.
“It is a joy to roll out Friendster’s inaugural event here, to a community that is continuously growing. We are committed in continually bringing the latest content and giving the most compelling rewards to our users,” Galicia said.
Friendster is set to hold a “FunXtion” game event on Friday at the SM North Cyberzone Activity Area in Quezon City to formally launch its new website to the public.
Friendster’s last redesign was in 2009, after it lost ground to other social networking sites such as Facebook.
The website discontinued its social network services and instead focused on allowing users to play games and listen to music.
