As the volcano in the rural town of Popoatepetl, at the foot of mexico continues to spew out smoke and ash, the residents of the near by towns prepare for a possible evacuation and adjust to the new life with the smoke and ash. Justina Galicia Popoca, a resident of san Nicolas de los ranchos, said that they were always on a high alert due to the volcano and would just wait for a security notice or alarm for a safety evacuation. “We get out via Cholula and then we move on from there depending on the eruption and if there is an alarm. So if we need to leave, where ever that be, then we will leave.”
Mexico’s National Centre for Disaster Prevention raised the alert level for Popocatepetl to yellow phase three from yellow phase two last week, indicating possible magma expulsion and explosions of increasing intensity. It is the third-highest warning on the centre’s seven-step scale. The municipal president for San Nicolas De Los Ranchos, Victoriano Melendez De La Rosa said government officials are keeping the small town briefed over any potential change to the volcano’s status. “It’s intensity went down the day before yesterday which gives security to the community but we are still in yellow phase three because it has not calmed down totally.
” Meanwhile, the children are having a difficulty in adjusting with the flu and the smoke. Apanco Barrios, an official at a community child care center said that the children were being given safety masks to protect them inhaling the volcano ash. “We have had children arrive with irritations in their eyes with flu symptoms and because of this they use face masks.”
