SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — The Whittell girls’ softball team was out for revenge on Tuesday – and the Warriors got it.

The Zephyr Cove School beat South Tahoe 7-6 after a tight loss the day before against the Vikings.

“I never wanted to win a game so bad after what they did to us yesterday,” Whittell pitcher Amanda Harris said after the game.

The Vikings won 10-9 in extra innings after a long three hour game at the South Tahoe Middle School softball field Monday.

Whittell struck first, taking a 3-0 lead in the third inning, with Amanda Harris and Kendall Ferris reaching the outfield on their hits, and Nina Jimenez driving in two runs.

In the third inning, the Vikings put two runs on the board and managed to take a 5-3 lead in the fifth after Hannah Neiger knocked in Bailey David and Kaila Griffis with a double. Neiger scored on a Mariah Meager single.

The Warriors weren’t out of the game though, tying 5-5 in the fifth inning with a hit by Nicki Simon that was just out of reach of a diving Brittany Sanchez at short stop and a RBI single from Jessie Sayre.

Emily Harris followed with a two RBI single to center scoring Briana Brewer and Megan Miller to give Whittell a 7-5 lead. The day before there was some misscommunication between the Warriors that worked out way better this time.

“There is also a lot of talking on the field,”said Gianna Miller about the good communication against South Tahoe.

In the seventh inning, the Vikings switched pitcher Mariah Meager for Hannah Neiger on the rubber.

“No matter how many times they swapped the pitcher, we were not intimidated by swinging the bat,” Miller said.

In the Vikings final at-bat, Amanda Harris out-dueld the heart of the Vikings order, getting Griffis to swing at a chin-high pitch and Neiger to put a ball on the ground, which was fielded by Sayre at first.

“During the last inning, our first baseman Jessie Sayre, that was awesome to go to your glove side down the line like that, she saved a run there,” Whittell coach Dave Galicia said.

Now rivals, Galicia coached with South Tahoe’s Steve Kolesnik at South Tahoe High School a few years ago.

“Its fun to now coach against each other. I love games like this, its competitive and that’s what makes softball fun,” he said.

Whittell’s next game will be Thursday against North Valley. South Tahoe faces Truckee on Wednesday.

“If we have a good practice tomorrow we will be ready for it,”Galicia said about Whittell’s upcoming game.
