The Ministry of Rural and Marine Affairs of Xunta de Galicia has confirmed that the associations of the estuary of Ferrol are working as usual after detecting amnesic shellfish poisoning (ASP) in one batch of clams that was going to be sold this Tuesday.

Specifically, the clams come from the platform polygons Sada-A and Sada-B in the estuary of Ares-Betanzos.

On checking the presence of the poisoning, the Galician Executive immediately ordered to stop seafood trade in Ferrol and in Barallobre.

Molluscs from areas C — which can not be consumed as fresh products — came from platforms that had been re-laid in Ferrol, the newspaper La Opinion reported.

After the detection, scientists from the Technological Institute for the Control of Marine Environment (Intecmar) conducted suitable tests and certified that the bivalves pose no health risk to consumers.

The Ministry of Marine Affairs remembered that the presence of different types of toxins in the Galician coast is natural.

In addition, she assured that experts from Intecmar held over 17,000 annual tests for biotoxins in order to “certify that the products leaving Galician estuaries rigorously comply with all the required parameters of legality.”

The regional government launched a resettlement scheme of bivalves in January. One of the depuration platforms was located in the estuary of Aldán, in Pontevedra, and the other one in Ferrol, between Prioriño Chico Cape and Coitelada point.

Throughout the day, it is expected that two meetings are held: one of them between the Galician administration and shellfish catchers from Ferrol, and the other one with those from O Burgo (A Coruña).

“We trust they will tell us something about the aid payments for regeneration work and that they will offer possible solutions to the pollution issue of the estuary,” said Virginia Souto, main chief of the Fishermen Association of Fene.

“After that, given what we are told, the members of the association will vote whether to continue or abandon the protest,” she added.
